About International

SWITEC International was established in South Africa by Markus A Gysi in 2010; with the intention of enriching the South African market with experience, skills and skills transfer in the field of Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) installation, cold-commissioning and maintenance.

Markus started his career in 1993 with Sprecher Energie (former Sprecher & Schuh) in Switzerland, which is known today as ALSTOM.

His career within ALSTOM comprised of drafting of GIS erection/installation drawings within the Drafting Department, costing of new GIS and installations within the Sales Department and project management of GIS maintenance within the GIS Service and Maintenance Department.

Markus started installing and cold-commissioning GIS in 1999 and since then has completed various installations spanning an international base.

SWITEC International is internationally accredited/certified to install and cold-commission various manufacturers’ equipment up to 275kV. The company is furthermore internationally certified in the handling of SF6 gas.

SWITEC International is passionate about skills transfer and offers training in GIS erection/installation, cold-commissioning and the handling of SF6 gas.

SWITEC International provides various professional services to the world leaders in the field of GIS in subequatorial Africa and the rest of the world.

  • SWITEC was awarded the contract by CONCO for the installation of 38 bay GIS board at Sebenza substation - February 2016

    The new substation near the Kelvin Power Station in Sebenza, Kempton Park is aimed at improving the quality, reliability and capacity of power supply to the northeastern region, one of the fastest growing areas of Johannesburg.

    The installation will be one of the biggest installation of GIS boards in Africa and SWITEC is proud to be among the key players in the field responsible for the stimulation of much-needed economic growth in South Africa’s biggest business hub, Johannesburg.

  • Cooperation with the Swiss company MBW Calibration - September 2015

    SWITEC is pleased to announce a new formal cooperation with the Swiss company MBW Calibration who manufacture the de-facto standard 973-SF6 gas analyzer which is the preferred choice for the major manufacturers of Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) such as ABB, Siemens and Alstom.

    SWITEC has invested in a 973-SF6 gas analyzer for GIS commissioning, SF6 gas quality measurements, user training and demonstration. The extensive experience in SF6 gas handling places SWITEC in the position to provide the very best advice and support to users of SF6 gas filled equipment.

  • SWITEC was contracted by SIEMENS to perform the 25/15/5 year inspection - June 2014

    SWITEC was contracted by SIEMENS to perform the 25/15/5 year inspection of the 145kV GIS for the City of Cape Town for the Cape Town metropolitan area. This major contract, with almost 80 bays, includes the inspection of the circuit breaker, the hydraulic system/spring mechanisms, isolators and earth switches as well as the refurbishment of 10 incoming/outgoing lines with air insulated bushings.
